The capital of Vorarlberg in western Austria, Bregenz sits on the east side of Lake Constance, the 3rd biggest fresh-water lake in Central Europe. Being on a flat area at the bottom of the Pfander Mountain, it boasts two main tourist seasons; the summer visitors who come to walk and enjoy the picturesque scenery and the winter skiers who hit the Alps behind. To house the many visitors the five star hotels Bregenz has are occupied throughout the year and offer excellent facilities. Many boast on site spas, complete with saunas and solariums, perfect after a day walking or skiing on the slopes.

Bregenz consists of two main areas; the older upper town with remnants from the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries and original town walls; and the lower town housing the tourist center, theater and other notable buildings of interest. Martinsturm, or Martin's Tower, is considered an important landmark in Bregenz, at heart a Roman building that has been added to over the years. It has the largest Baroque ovular shaped steeple-tower in the center of Europe and it is used as a building for the Museum of Military History, as well as some 14th Century murals. The view from the top is stunning and worth the walk up. St. Gallus Church is also worth viewing, an impressive building with foundations dating to before 1380 and a spectacular baroque altar. Other buildings of note include the Art House and the Post office Building and in the lower town enjoy the town hall and the varied churches. The Mehrerau Cistercian Monastery is located on the outskirts of the town and dates back to the 7th Century, it has a checkered history and despite closures there still runs today a priory at nearby Schloss Maurach.

The Lake Promenade affords a pleasant area to stroll and enjoy views across the lake. In the evening during summer there are spectacular sunsets and many outdoor restaurants along the way. It is a well-known meeting point for local politicians, philosophers, musicians, writers and other visitors spend time in the outdoor pool or view the lake by boat. Some of the five star hotels Bregenz has on offer are situated nearby, making it convenient to head out for a walk after dinner.

The ruins of the fortress of Hohenbregenz are situated on the Gebhardsberg rock, offering wonderful views. To enjoy the mountains fully, take the Pfanderbahn, a cable car that takes visitors to the top of Pfander Mountain. On a clear day views are afforded across to Germany and Switzerland and maybe try counting the numerous mountain peaks visible. A small yet interesting wildlife park can be found up here, home to goats, wild boar and red deer as well as birds of prey. A Bird of Prey show is offered twice a day and can be followed by a look round the few shops and a coffee in the restaurant.

The city is especially famous for the annual summer music festival Bregenzer Festspiele, a performing arts festival presenting a wide range of musical and theatrical events. The floating stage over Lake Constance hosts large-scale operas and musicals and less extravagant performances of concerts, theater and opera are held in various locations in the city. It becomes very busy at this time so to avoid disappointment book the five star hotels Bregenz offers in plenty of time. Many hotels feature on site restaurants, offering their guest gastronomic delights. Standard facilities include private or en-suite bathrooms, tea and coffee making equipment and Wi-Fi.

There are various trips on offer from Bregenz, including the nearby Rolls-Royce Museum and the islands of Lindau and Mainau.
